What is a VA Pension Program? 

The Veterans Pension will provide needed tax-free funds to help pay for the assistance of someone to help with activities of daily living such as eating, dressing, transferring, mobility, toileting, or bathing.

The benefit is for wartime Veterans, the need for care doesn’t have to be service-connected. Mental incapacity due to dementia or Alzheimer’s Disease, blindness, along with other conditions associated with aging may qualify the veteran, spouse, or surviving spouse for this benefit.

Friends, relatives, or professional staff can provide this care at home, in an assisted living facility, or in a nursing home.

Who is eligible for Benefits for VA Pension Program?

Veterans who served during a period of war, their spouses, their surviving spouses. Must have served for at least one day during the period of war, 90 consecutive days of active duty, and honorable discharge.

The need for aid does not have to be service-related for those over the age of 65. For those under 65, assistance is available for total disability or for service-related partial disabilities.

A surviving spouse must have been married to the veteran at the time of their death and they can not have remarried in order to qualify. 

How much can you receive once approved?

Here are the 2022 benefits (effective Dec 1st, 2022.

A married veteran can receive up to $2,431 per month; a single veteran may receive up to $2,050 per month. The benefit for care for a non-veteran spouse is $1,609 and a surviving spouse is $1,317 per month.

These benefits are Tax-Free and do not affect any Social Security payments or taxes.

Compensation Benefits Description

Disability Compensation is a tax-free benefit paid to Veterans with disabilities that are the result of a disease or injury incurred or aggravated during active military service.

Compensation may also be available to all Veterans whether peacetime or war-time veteran.

Being unemployable due to a service-related disability can also trigger a benefit.
